This paper discusses the Oberbeck-Boussinesq approximation for heat and solute transport in porous media. In this commonly
used approximation all density variations are neglected except for the gravity term in Darcy’s law. However, in the limit
of vanishing density differences this gravity term disappears as well. The main purpose of this paper is to give the correct
limits in which the gravity term is retained, while other density effects can be neglected. We show that for isothermal brine
transport, fluid volume changes can be neglected when a condition is fulfilled for a dimensionless number, which is independent
of the density difference and specific discharge. For heat transfer an additional condition is required. One-dimensional examples
of simultaneous heat and brine transport are given for which similarity solutions are constructed. These examples are included
to elucidate the volume effects and the corresponding induced specific discharge variations. Finally, a two-dimensional example
illustrates the relative effects of volume changes and gravity. 相似文献

In this paper, we treat the nonlinear stability problem of shallow spherical shells with large values ofk(k=12(1–v) · 2f/h,f = shell rise,h = shell thickness) under the action of uniformly distributed line load along a circle concentric with the shell boundary. Load-deflection curves are computed at successive increments of uniformly distributed line loads by using both cubic B-spline approximations and iterative techniques. Our algorithm yields fairly good convergent results for values ofk as large as 400. The limiting case in which shells are loaded along a circle of small radius has been specially investigated and the computed critical loads are compared with those obtained with central point loads by other authors. 相似文献

The equations of long nonlinear waves in round jets and channels of arbitrary cross section are considered with account for the transverse acceleration of the fluid particles (Boussinesq approximation). In the general case of steady flows, the equations in the form of shallow water equations with the pressure expressed in terms of the variational derivative of the kinetic energy of a thin transverse fluid layer, have three first integrals with three arbitrary constants. Examples of solutions of the equations for solitary capillary-gravitation waves in rectangular and triangular channels are presented and compared with the higher approximations. The shape of the free boundary of the round jet is determined. In the case of outflow from a conical nozzle an analytical dependence of the jet contraction ratio on the conicity angle is obtained. The dependence is in agreement with the experimental data for angles of less than 45°. 相似文献

We consider a 2 time scale nonlinear system of ordinary differential equations. The small parameter of the system is the ratio ϵ of the time scales. We search for an approximation involving only the slow time unknowns and valid uniformly for all times at order O(ϵ2). A classical approach to study these problems is Tikhonov's singular perturbation theorem. We develop an approach leading to a higher order approximation using the renormalization group (RG) method. We apply it in 2 steps. In the first step, we show that the RG method allows for approximation of the fast time variables by their RG expansion taken at the slow time unknowns. Next, we study the slow time equations, where the fast time unknowns are replaced by their RG expansion. This allows to rigorously show the second order uniform error estimate. Our result is a higher order extension of Hoppensteadt's work on the Tikhonov singular perturbation theorem for infinite times. The proposed procedure is suitable for problems from applications, and it is computationally less demanding than the classical Vasil'eva‐O'Malley expansion. We apply the developed method to a mathematical model of stem cell dynamics. 相似文献

A typical class of boundary conditions for squeeze flow problems in lubrication approximation is the one in which the squeezing rate and the width between the squeezing plates are constant. This hypothesis is justified by claiming that the plates moves so slowly that they can be considered static.
